Artisan Stories \\ Albert Harvey

As someone who has a keen interest in arts, and as a keen amateur crafter, photographing a skilled artist is nothing short of exciting, every time! Off I was to Oxforshire to shoot Albert Harvey, his work and his beautiful designs inspired by the English countryside surrounding his studio.

Albert is a print marker and textile designer who studied at the Bath School of Art and Design where he developed a passion for the ancient art of block printing.

Albert skilfully carves his designs onto Lino to create large blocks ready for printing which he does himself by hand so that each print is unique. A restrained colour palette combined with his naturalistic designs, printed on 100% natural linen/cotton mix base, give Albert Harvey’s textiles a timeless, contemporary feel.

Albert works in a quiet workshop space in a barn, fiercely guarded by passive-aggressive geese. It was an experience just to go there. It was an exciting experience to see the printing process, surrounded by the countryside that inspired Albert’s work.

Instead of wood blocks he carves his designs of lino because this material is a lot more flexible than wood. Each print is always unique, depending on where he has placed on the linen fabric.
