UK Travel // Farmhouse at Redcoats

Brunching at Farmhouse at Redcoats is always such a treat. Tucked away, it doesn’t feel as if it’s near anywhere much. A few miles from Hitchin, just off the A1M, it is extremely easy to get to – by car at least.  Once you are there you get to stroll around the gardens or stride off across the Hertfordshire countryside fields.

You can stay for a short break too – a tad too near home for me to justify this option. The barn has been beautifuly restored to its former role. A perfect place to escape to for a weekend or short break in the stunning countryside near London. Parts of the building date back to the 15th century and it boasts four acres of gardens with such lovely views across the rolling Hertfordshire countryside.

The Farmhouse at Redcoats restaurant is mainly a conservatory-based affair that looks out onto the hotel’s well-tended gardens. It serves a delicious moderately priced, contemporary British  menu based around seasonal and local ingredients. You will find lovely oysters and amazing seafood from Brancaster Staithe in North Norfolk and, of course, local game and pork. The hotel and restaurant are very much part of the Herts-based Nye family’s Anglian Country Inns. They own a few other pubs in the local area as well as places in Norfolk.

The extra cosy Conservatory restaurant is under the command of Sherwin Jacobs, formerly head chef at ACI’s The Fox at Willian. Sherwin Jacobs grew up on a farm in South Africa. A true self-confessed fanatic for the ‘farm-to-table’ school of cooking. And there is so much for me to describe, I feel you just need to book for yourself. It is pretty essential.
