Nestled in the storybook village of Hay-on-Wye, renowned for its bookshops and idyllic charm, lies a rustic cottage that I had the pleasure of photographing. The opportunity came as an exciting collaboration —a few nights in the cottage in return for capturing its essence through my lens. It was more than just another photography project – I did not just come and leave ; it was a chance to actually experience the town and also tell you how incredible the location of the cottage is. And also captured the light at different times, put the fire on and go down the deli for some cheese.
Embracing Rustic Beauty
The cottage immediately spoke to me with its stonewalls, exposed wooden beams, and fireplace. It carried the character of a place that had weathered seasons, and been exposed by the current owners. My goal was not to stage perfection but to bring the rusticity of the natural stone, the vintage items that gives it its charm.
The owners, Kirstin and Stefan, did a wonderful job preserving the cottage’s heritage while infusing it with all the modern comforts. Each detail tells a story: the worn leather armchair by the fire, the shelf brimming with vintage bottles and curiosities.
We have a chance to walk round in Hay-on-Wye, and enjoy visiting the book shops (all the bookshops!) and all the cafes. We went out on country walks, managed to visit Brobury gardens, eat a pastie or 2 and buy more books .
Hay-on-Wye is pretty special. Not too touristy – but we did not go during the book festival – when the little town is probably rammed with people, and totally worth a visit if it is not on your list already.
Hay-on-Wye’s magic, and the little cottage has been a great base for our weekend away. We also managed a little trip to see Otis and Jean’s house and also pay a visit to Baileys Home Store.
For those considering similar collaborations, get in touch with me. I am always interested to heard how I can help bring the personality to your cottage. I only a few availabilities for collars, as our holidays are quit limited by the kids’ schedules and work.
